Travel to Canada and your first weeks

Once your work permit is approved, the practical part begins. Here is what the journey and the first weeks look like.

Flight and arrival

Some employers pay or reimburse the flight ticket; this is stated in each job offer. At the airport in Canada, a border officer reviews your documents and issues your work permit. Keep your contract, LMIA and approval letter in your hand luggage, not in your checked bag.

Accommodation

Many employers provide accommodation or help you find it, usually shared housing near the workplace with a rent deducted from your pay. The conditions are written in the offer before you accept it.

First administrative steps

In the first days you apply for your Social Insurance Number, open a Canadian bank account and register for provincial health coverage where applicable. Your employer explains transport to the workplace and your shift schedule.

First pay

Wages are paid weekly or every two weeks by bank transfer, with taxes and contributions deducted at source. Plan to have funds for your first two to four weeks before the first payment arrives.
